Thuya Smaragd, also known as the Thuya Emerald Green, prefers a full sun situation, reasonable topsoil free draining. It is ideal as a vertical accent plant, planted singularly or in rows along driveways or avenues. Its form means it requires no maintenance for many years. Surprisingly it has not (yet) been adopted as a shelter belt plant in horticulture, which may change once orchardists realize the zero-pruning requirement of T. Smaragd to keep it contained.

To keep a slight gap between plants in a row, plant at 1m spacings. Plant at 80cm spacing to have the plants eventually touch.

If a plant gets beyond a required height it can have the top removed to keep it down.
